INDICATIONS

FDA

  • Chemoprophylaxis of P. falciparum malaria, including in areas where chloroquine resistance has been reported.[1][17]
  • Treatment of acute, uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria.[17]

NON-FDA APPROVED USES

  • Chemoprophylaxis in all malaria-endemic areas (not limited to P. falciparum).[1]
  • Severe malaria—atovaquone/proguanil is not primary definitive therapy
    • Can be considered as initial oral bridge therapy to IV artesunate if IV artesunate not immediately available.
    • As an alternative complete follow-on oral regimen after IV artesunate once parasitemia ≤1%.
