MICROBIOLOGY

  • Eumycetoma: caused by a variety of fungi most commonly Madurella spp. including dematiaceous fungi.
  • Actinomycetoma: caused by gram positive, filamentous higher bacteria (Actinomyces spp., Nocardia spp.); important to distinguish by culture from eumycetoma to direct appropriate therapy .
