Vascular Dementia
DEFINITION
- Vascular dementia is a syndrome of acquired impairment in multiple cognitive domains as a result of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events that reduce cerebral blood flow and/or cause ischemic brain injury.
- It is classified under "Major or Mild Neurocognitive Disorders" in DSM-5-TR, which requires evidence of cerebrovascular disease sufficient to account for neurocognitive deficits, and excludes cases better explained by another etiology, with deficits that do not occur exclusively in the context of delirium, and represent a significant decline from a previous level of functioning.
