Vascular Dementia
DEFINITION
- Acquired impairments in multiple cognitive domains as a result of one or multiple cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events causing ischemic brain injury.
- Cumulative cardiovascular problems (e.g. atherosclerosis, thrombosis, vasculopathy) can reduce cerebral blood flow.
- Impairments cause a decline in social and occupational functioning.
- Chronic cognitive decline due to vascular dementia is classified under the neurocognitive disorders section of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5)[1].
