Anthrax vaccine

VACCINE TYPE

  • Anthrax vaccine (AVA, BioThrax) is a killed vaccine made from the cell-free filtrate of the nonencapsulated, attenuated strain of B. anthracis culture that contains no live bacteria.
    • Note: a live attenuated vaccine was manufactured in the former USSR but is no longer available.
  • Cyfendus is the adjuvanted AVA, made from cell-free filtrates of a microaerophilic culture of an avirulent, nonencapsulated strain of B. anthracis.
  • For post-exposure prophylaxis of disease following suspected or confirmed exposure to Bacillus anthracis in persons 18 through 65 years of age when administered in conjunction with recommended antibacterial drugs
