Aging and HIV

Damani A. Piggott, M.D., Ph.D., Christopher J. Hoffmann, M.D., M.P.H.

DEFINITION

  • Growing older with HIV can lead to considerations of general age-related medical conditions and increased drug-drug interactions.
  • HIV itself may contribute to increased and earlier risk for specific age-associated pathophysiologic conditions.
  • People with HIV who are aging may have increased social morbidity in limited social support networks, varying spousal support and legal standing (depending on local laws for relating to same-sex marriage), and may face discrimination in accessing assisted living and other services associated with aging.
