Peripheral Neuropathy
DEFINITION
- Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes that can manifest in many different forms such as distal symmetric peripheral neuroapthy (DPN), small fiber neuropathy, and mononeuropathy.
- DPN is the most common form of peripheral neuropathy in diabetes. It is a length-dependent, sensorimotor and predominantly axonal peripheral neuropathy in which symptoms begin at the distal ends of the longest peripheral nerves (i.e., those that extend to the feet).
- Sensory symptoms are predominant and often times symmetric[25].
