Infectious causes include:
- Staphylococcus aureus, including community-acquired strains of MRSA (acute)
- Streptococcus spp. (acute)
- Anaerobes (acute)
- Candida albicans (chronic)
- Atypical mycobacteria (chronic)
- Gram-negative rods (GNR, chronic)
