Nutrition for Type 1 Diabetes

Christine McKinney, RD, LDN, CDE

DEFINITION

  • All people with diabetes should receive diabetes self-management education (DSME), diabetes self-management support (DSMS), and medical nutrition therapy (MNT)[6].
  • MNT is nutrition counseling that includes an individualized nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, intervention (education and counseling) and monitoring, and evaluation with ongoing follow up by a registered dietitian.
  • Both MNT and DSME are reimbursed by Medicare as well as most health insurance plans. Medicare refers to this as diabetes self-management training (DSMT) which has the same meaning as DSME.
  • The goal of nutrition therapy is to attain individualized glycemic, blood pressure, and lipid goals; achieve and maintain body weight goals; and delay or prevent complications of diabetes[4].
