Mycetoma

MICROBIOLOGY

  • Mycetoma: nonspecific term describing chronic infectious process either due to bacteria (actinomycetoma) or fungi (eumycetoma).
    • Eumycetoma: caused by a variety of fungi most commonly Madurella spp., including dematiaceous fungi.
    • Actinomycetoma: caused by Gram-positive, filamentous higher bacteria (Actinomyces spp., Nocardia spp.); important to distinguish by culture from eumycetoma to direct appropriate therapy.
