- Herpes simplex virus
- Treponema pallidum (primary syphilis or chancre)
- Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid)
- Chlamydia trachomatis L1, L2 and L3 serovars causing lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)
- Klebsiella granulomatis (formerly Calymmatobacterium granulomatis) causing granuloma inguinale (donovanosis)
- Rarer infectious causes of genital ulcer adenopathy syndrome:
- Non-infectious causes: trauma, fixed drug eruption, Reiter’s syndrome, Behçets syndrome.
