PATHOGENS
- Anaerobes: primarily Bacteroides and Peptostreptococcus spp.
- Aerobes: particularly Escherichia coli
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae (may account for 10-15% of cases)
- Chlamydia trachomatis (much less frequent than gonorrhea)
