Antisocial Personality Disorder

DEFINITION

• Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), as defined in the DSM-5-TR, describes a "pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others. The disorder begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood."
• While the behavior of the person tends to be impulsive and is often criminal, antisocial personality disorder must be distinguished from general criminal behavior. Diagnosis requires a pervasive pattern across contexts defined by broader interpersonal, affective, and behavioral patterns (e.g., deceitfulness, lack of remorse), not isolated criminal acts.
