Peliosis hepatis

PATHOGENS

  • Definition: blood filled cavities (lakes) in liver that develop through neo-angiogenesis. Often accompanied by peliosis in the spleen (and also other reticuloendothelial organs - bone, lymph nodes, etc.).
  • Causes: in HIV-positive pts usually caused be infection by Bartonellaspp or TB. In HIV-negative (and some HIV-positive) pts, caused by anabolic steroids, Castleman’s disease, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia and other malignancies including hepatic tumors, danazol, azithioprine, methotrexate, and other agents.
