- Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents
- Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a component of FDA-approved FTC/TDF or FTC/TAF fixed-dose combinations.
- FTC/TDF: adults and adolescents weighing ≥35 kg with potential sexual or injection-drug exposure.
- FTC/TAF: adults and adolescents weighing ≥35 kg with potential sexual exposure, excluding those likely to acquire HIV through receptive vaginal sex.

- Treatment of hepatitis B in HIV-HBV co-infected patients as part of a fully suppressive ART regimen containing TAF or TDF plus FTC
- FTC should not be used as the sole HBV-active drug because HBV resistance emerges readily.
