- Dimorphic fungus existing as a mycelial form in nature and as endosporulating spherule in tissue. Lives in soil.
- Infection acquired through inhalation of arthroconidia, which are then converted to spherules within 48 hrs.
- Endemic in central CA, southern AZ, southern NM, and west TX, northern Mexico, and parts of Central and South America.
- Species:
- Coccidioides immitis
- Coccidioides posadasii
