DEFINITION

  • An "artificial pancreas" generally refers to automated, closed-looped insulin-delivery systems for patients with diabetes. They generally are comprised of a continuous glucose monitor, continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (insulin pump), and a processor with loaded algorithms to determine the dosage of insulin to deliver. Some systems are "bihormonal," containing both insulin and glucagon.
