Driving with Diabetes

DEFINITION

• The vast majority of people with diabetes drive regularly and safely.
• Driving by patients with diabetes may, however, be impaired by three factors: hypoglycemia, diabetes complications, and hyperglycemia.
• Hypoglycemia unawareness may pose an increased threat to driving.
• With the exception of interstate commercial driving, which is subject to federal regulations, rules are determined by each state
• Some states impose no special requirements for people with diabetes while others ask more detailed questions about the condition
• Drivers with diabetes are identified in various ways. In about half of the states, drivers are asked if they have diabetes or a condition likely to cause altered perception or loss of consciousness while driving; if the answer is yes, a medical evaluation is usually required before a license will be issued.
