- Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV) is caused by the genus Colitivirus (Spinareoviridae), a segmented RNA virus transmitted by ticks (Dermacentor andersoni, the Rocky Mountain wood tick--the only confirmed vector of CTFV).
- Viruses are maintained in rodent hosts such as ground squirrels and chipmunks.
