MICROBIOLOGY

Rapidly-growing, hardy, ubiquitous mycobacterium commonly found in the environment, including municipal tap water.
Results of in vitro drug susceptibility tests should be used to guide antimicrobial therapy (though susceptibility is unpredictable).
Lab should differentiate from M. abscessus with which it can be confused since this organism is more difficult to treat.
