DEFINITION
- Pancreas transplant (PTx) refers to allo-transplantation (human to human) of the whole pancreas, including islets of Langerhans, acinar tissue, pancreatic ducts and blood vessels. Pancreas transplant alone (PTA) refers to pancreas transplantation without a transplanted kidney.
- Simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK) involves transplanting both a pancreas and a kidney simultaneously.
- Pancreas after kidney (PAK) refers to PTx in a recipient who has already received a kidney transplant.
- Islet autotransplantation is separation of islets from a person's own pancreas and retransplantation of those islets into the same person.
- Islet allotransplantation is separation of islets of Langerhans (1-2% of pancreas mass), transplanted by infusion via the portal vein into a recipient.
