MICROBIOLOGY

  • Gram-negative diplococcus, appears identical to N. gonorrhoeae.
  • Grows easily on blood chocolate agar.
  • Colonizes upper airways in 5-15% of population, found only in humans.
  • Commonly produces beta-lactamase, 95% of strains resistant to amoxicillin.
